JumpStart antimicrobial wound dressing is an advanced microcurrent-generating dressing for the management of surgical incision sites. Microcell batteries made of elemental silver and zinc generate an electrical current when activated by conductive fluids, such as wound exudate, water-based wound hydrogels, saline, or water. These microcell batteries create microcurrents to support the body's natural electrical healing process and provide antimicrobial protection to assist with wound healing. JumpStart antimicrobial wound dressing has demonstrated broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against antibiotic-resistant strains of wound isolates within 24 hours.1-3

JumpStart® FlexEFit™ antibacterial wound dressing employs a novel “link and build” design, enabling it to be “built” during application to seamlessly cover incisions of virtually any length or curvature with just one product configuration. JumpStart dressings can be applied directly over sutures, staples, Steri-Strip™ wound closures, and liquid skin adhesives. The dot-matrix pattern of embedded microcell batteries generates microcurrents on the dressing surface in the presence of a conductive medium such as sterile saline, water-based gel, or wound exudate.&nbsp;

JumpStart® FlexEFit® Antibacterial Wound Dressing

The Arthrex JumpStart Antibacterial Wound Dressing utilizes a patented technology of embedded silver and zinc islands that, when hydrated, generate a physiological microcurrent through the dressing. The presence of the microcurrent has been demonstrated in studies to promote an optimal environment for wound healing applied to the surgical site, either before and or after surgery, to help reduce the risk of infection. Jumpstart has been proven to kill a broad spectrum of microbes, including microbes that have been shown to be resistant to antibiotics for spine surgery. The JumpStart FlexEFit provides the optimal solution for wound covering, as the dressing can be joined together based on the length of the patient's incision. Start by hydrating the FlexEFit dressing with Energel wound hydrogel. Remove the liners labeled one and place on top of the proximal portion of the incision. Make sure to press down gently on dressing to ensure direct contact of the pad with the incision. For incision lengths that require more than one FlexEFit dressing. Additional dressings can be attached in a daisy chain fashion, accommodating incisions for all lengths. To link an additional FlexEFit dressing to the first fold, back the liner labeled two. Repeat adding Energel to the second dressing. Remove the liners labeled one and place on top of the distal portion of the first dressing. Make sure to press down gently on the dressing to ensure direct contact of the pad with the incision. The previous steps can be repeated as many times as necessary until the full length of the incision is covered. Once linking the dressings together is complete, fold back the liner labeled two on the second dressing and remove the liner labeled with numbers three, four, and five. Affix this adhesive layer down onto the skin once smoothed down. Remove the blue tabs to remove the backing. Repeat the same steps with any additional dressings. Jumpstart is ideal for dressing any type of surgical site wound with size offerings that can cover an endoscopic approach portal all the way up to a T2 pelvis incision. Examples of surgical approach incisions were JumpStart can be used as a wound dressing are acdf, pqf, plif, tlif, leaf olef, aliff, and deformity correction.

Spinal Fascia Closure Using the Spine Scorpion™ Suture Passer

Spine Scorpion™ Suture Passer for Spinal Fascia Closure

The spine Scorpion suture passer is ideal for closing the fascia at the end of minimally invasive spine procedures. The low profile design allows for easy access to the fascia at all depths for procedures done through either a tubular or mini open approach. The Scorpion automatically passes and retrieves multiple types of suture, including O and two O resorbable suture. To load, depress, and hold the handle so that the tip of the needle is deployed from the foot. Once the needle is exposed, create a loop with the suture so that there is roughly one inch of tail, and then wrap the suture over the needle. Pull the suture snug so that it engages with the notch at the tip of the needle, while continuing to hold the suture snug. Release the handle so that the needle retracts, pulling and loading the suture into the foot. With the suture properly loaded. Pull the trigger to close the jaw and introduce the Scorpion into the incision to the depth of the fascia. Once the proper depth has been achieved, open the jaw of the Scorpion and slide the foot under the fascia. Gently close the jaw to grasp the fascia, manipulating as needed. Squeeze the handle to advance the advance the needle, passing the suture through the fascia. Once complete, release the trigger and handle. The jaw will automatically capture the suture, and the instrument can be removed from the incision to remove the suture. Pull the trigger to close the jaw and squeeze the handle to advance the needle, while using your opposite hand to pull the suture. Reload the suture into the Scorpion and pass through the other side of the fascia. Using a new suture. Repeat the previous steps. First in the opposite corner of the fascia incision and then in the middle, passing as many times as needed until the surgeon feels the fascia can be adequately closed. Depending on the depth of the incision, a knot pusher may be required to appropriately tie the knots and secure the suture. Additionally, a suture cutter may be required beyond a certain depth to properly cut the suture. It is recommended that a tail between 2 to 4mm be left after cutting.

The low profile design allows for easy access during approaches performed through either a tubular or mini open incision. The spine Scorpion automatically passes and retrieves multiple types of suture, including O and two zero Vicryl. The suture is easily loaded into the capture mechanism of the jaws. The unique design of the Scorpion allows the jaws to grasp and manipulate the fascia, allowing for the suture to be quickly and easily passed through the fascia. After passing the suture, the unique jaw design captures the suture, allowing for the surgeon to easily pull the suture out of the incision. This action can be repeated as many times as needed until the fascia has been closed.
